Listed below are details from a talk I gave at my preschool on social networking for moms (Oct. 24). I wondered if anyone would show up, but I was happy to see five moms and even one dad show up to discuss online networking. Each had a different reason for their interest, the dad wanted to network for business and the moms either wanted to start blogs as a way to get their voices heard or start an online business. I talked to other parents that could not make it to the talk but were also interested in online networking for meeting other parents or for business networking. So the online networking wave is also catching parents, it will be interesting to see how it changes the nature of networking in the years to come.
I know that I have meet some amazing moms through blogging, so I am hooked!
What is Social Networking?
Everyone has the need to connect, so people search other people with similar interests. Then they gather in networks of friends through schools, work, neighborhood, religious affiliations, hobbies. There is specific etiquette that helps people move from meeting someone to becoming part of the network. Some of the networking rules are clear, some are hard to understand.
As moms (parents), we search out other moms (parents) to network with for support, playdates and companionship. But the added challenge is that being a mother is also isolating, scheduling challenges may make it hard to put in the time to finding other moms with similar interests.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (www.wikipedia.org)
A social network service focuses on the building and verifying of online social networks for communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others, and which necessitates the use of software.
Most social network services are primarily web based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, and so on.
What is online social networking for moms? Similar to the basic definition of social networking, but online. Online social networking is when a mom joins an online community or becomes a regular blog reader. The community can be with other friends, business associates or both. The timing can be before school drop-off or after kid’s bedtime while sitting in your pajamas. Because the platform is online, it allows users to reach a whole network of people with similar interests. Communication can be two way or one, and timing is controlled by the user.

It’s all about RSS (from www.wikipedia.org): RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel," contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.
RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader," "feed reader" or an "aggregator." The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.
