Great Family Adventure Inspired by the film #EarthtoEcho

Disclosure: Sponsored Post.

official geocacheNow that summer is here, it is a great time for outdoor adventures and fresh air. One family activity my kids especially enjoy is called Geocaching“ a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices”.  Beyond the excitement of looking for outdoor treasure in hidden containers, Geocaching gives us exercise by riding our bikes while using the Geocache app to find local sites.

When I was asked to join in a campaign for the new movie “Earth to Echo” and document our own sponsored adventure using the Go-Pro 3 – I could not wait! It was a great opportunity to spend quality time with my teen and document it with the GoPro. Check out the bottom of this post for the video of our geocaching adventure!

Watching the trailer for the new movie (coming out July 2nd), I was reminded of my favorite childhood family films like E.T. which capture the excitement of an adventure between friends. “Earth to Echo” has the added twist of some new modern technology and a mysteriously cute alien.

Here is more information about Earth to Echo from the movie’s press release:

“Friendship is the greatest adventure of all.  Earth To Echo – In theaters July 2, 2014.

Tuck, Munch and Alex are a closely bonded trio of inseparable friends, but their time together is coming to an end. Their neighborhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project that is forcing their families to move away. But just two days before they must part ways, the boys find a cryptic signal has infected their phones.

Earth to Echo

Convinced something bigger is going on and looking for one final adventure together, they set off to trace the messages to their source and discover something beyond their wildest imaginations: hiding in the darkness is a mysterious being, stranded on Earth, and wanted by the government.

Earth to Echo

This launches the boys on an epic journey full of danger and wonder, one that will test the limits of their friendship and change all of their lives forever.

Fed Up – New Documentary On Sugar and Obesity in America

Healthy food Lately I have been busy trying to help my family really understand how to live a healthy lifestyle. I realized it is not only about exercise or eating food that seems “healthy”. It is also about understanding what are the right foods to eat and to control things like the amount of sugar being consumed. We have a history of diabetes in our family so it is especially important. I really did get “Fed Up” with the type of foods in the schools, restaurants and even grocery stores that have moved so far away from whole food ingredients. We just recently started cooking from scratch, adding more plant foods and even making my kid’s lunches for school. I am also trying new nutritional apps and websites that I am excited to talk more about in future posts.

But for today, I am excited that Katie Couric took her amazing background in investigative journalism and worked with Laurie David (Oscar winning producer of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH) and director Stephanie Soechtig, to create a documentary on the truth behind the obesity crisis in America called Fed Up opening in Theatres across the country today (May 9).  This was the topic of the Katie Couric Show on May 8 as well. I wanted to share some of this information to help spread the word in the hopes that everyone will take the time to learn more about this important topic.

On Thursday’s episode of the nationally syndicated daytime talk show “Katie,” that aired  May 8, Laurie David and Katie discussed their documentary “Fed Up” on obesity in America and the truth behind one of the greatest health crisis of our time.   Director Stephanie Soechtig joined the conversation along with Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Margo Wootan, Director of Nutrition Policy at the Center for Science In The Public Interest. Find out what you should be doing to live healthier and longer and how this obesity crisis happened.

Today, May 9 the Fed Up Documentary is now at Theatres. I will be taking my family to the see the documentary to learn important information about this health crisis! There is also a FedUp Challenge to join in by clicking HERE. The trailer from the movie gives more details:

Safe Haven Movie Tech Press Tour: Romance meets Social Media

The movie, Safe Haven, will share the romance by opening on Valentines Day, February 14th. In my last post, I shared my thoughts about the movie, a must see romantic thriller! I was fortunate a month ago to join the Author/Producer, Nicholas Sparks, and one of the movie’s stars Josh Duhamel, as well as the Relativity Media team for part of their tech press tour. How unique and exciting to see a movie include tech partnerships as part of their launch, giving fans new ways to expand their movie experience. With an engaging cast (including Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough), a beautiful set, and a great story written by Nicholas Sparks, the movie delivers on all fronts.

The San Francisco Safe Haven tech tour included the following stops:
1. PopSugar: The Safe Haven team stopped by PopSugar where they had a fun “cupcake” ambush of their editors and posed for pictures at a photobooth. Both Josh Duhamel and Nicholas Sparks were great sports posing for pictures with each and every one who waited in line for a picture, all with equal enthusiasm! They even let one specific tech mom sneak in for a picture she will never forget.

1. One Kings Lane:
Safe Haven provided One Kings Lane with approximately 20 décor items from the set.  One Kings Lane will execute a Safe Haven sale on or around 2/14 for 72 hours where they will sell the set décor, signed books from Sparks, and a signed script.  Proceeds will benefit the Nicholas Sparks Foundation.  I can’t wait to see what set items will be available for sale considering that the movie set location was scenic Wilmington and Southport, North Carolina.

2. Shutterfly :   Nicholas Sparks and Josh Duhamel engaged with a big group of fans at Shutterfly, taking photos together and answering questions.

They inspired enough romance from talking that CEO of Shutterfly Jeff Housenbold gave a kiss to his wife at the end of the event (everyone cheered).

The fun Shutterfly offer available now for anyone is: Send 5 free Shutterfly cards to the people you love! Use promo code: safehaven at www.shutterfly.com/safehaven  to redeem this offer by 2/25/13.

3. Twitter:  The Safe Haven team also stopped by Twitter’s headquarters and participated in a screening organized by Twitter Movies (with Twitter staff)

Safe Haven movie tech tour – Twitter Movies interviews Nicholas Sparks and Josh Duhamel

After seeing Josh Duhamel and Nicholas Sparks in action, I realized they understood not only the art of making movies and books, but also how to engage with their fans in a genuine way. Nicholas Sparks shared that interactions in social media can foster quality listening… and listening produces measurable data. He listens to social media conversations on books and movies regarding what the fans like and don’t like, and that helps him analyze what people really want. In addition, the Safe Haven team realizes that social media is not only important, but is also growing.  You can follow the Safe Haven movie on multiple social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and more! Safe Haven is now out in the theatres, so click here to find out movie times.

Safe Haven Movie Out Feb. 14 – Must See Romantic Thriller

Last week I had the fun and fabulous opportunity to accompany Author and Producer Nicholas Sparks and Co-Star Josh Duhamel of the movie “Safe Haven” as they toured some local SF Bay Area tech companies. I’m a fan of Josh Duhamel movies, where he delivers great performances as a romantic lead actor, and I also look forward to movies made from Nicholas Spark’s romantic books. While comedies and action thrillers have their place, I can’t resist a good romantic movie in a beautiful setting where the main characters sizzle, experiencing romance and transformation through a suspenseful storyline.

A private screening of “Safe Haven” that day helped me realize that the movie delivers on all of that (and more!!). Here is information about the movie Safe Haven from Nicholas Sparks website: “When a mysterious young woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.” The movie is inspired by Nicholas Spark’s book of the same name “Safe Haven”. Both Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough brought their characters alive with that special chemistry that makes you root for them being together.

Josh’s and Nicholas’ onscreen work is very entertaining. Would they be as engaging offscreen in real life interaction with their fans? To my delight, they delivered – and much more. Social media professionals appreciate the importance of engaging with the online community. I am thrilled every time I meet someone in real life who follows my online tech parenting columns and social media updates. From what I witnessed, Nicholas Sparks and Josh Duhamel were authentically excited to meet with fans throughout the day and greeted each and every one with the same enthusiasm, even though the line at some locations to take pictures with them was very long (such as the stop at Popsugar). They laughed, talked and made everyone feel at ease, even the gal at one of the tour stops who cried (of joy) when she saw Josh Duhamel. They even made one specific Techmama (trying to keep her cool) very happy by posing with her for some fun pictures.

Josh Duhamel shared that he enjoys social media interaction with his fans via Twitter, Facebook and more. These communication methods are important to interact with his online community as well as share information about charity events such as the Youth Run with the Red Cross.

Nicholas Sparks revealed that he values the importance of digital to reach fans and followers, utilizing multiple platforms such as his website, Facebook page and Twitter @SparksNicholas.  He believes that interacting on digital platforms fosters quality listening, and helps him gather feedback from fans. He created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, “a nonprofit committed to inspiring and transforming students lives through education, curriculum development, and life changing international experiences, so they are prepared to embrace a life of being active learners and engaged global citizens“. Relativity Media  (Safe Haven’s Studio) partnered with the Nicholas Sparks Foundation by offering fans the ability to purchase tickets to Los Angeles Safe Haven Premiere and Post Premiere Reception on February 5th. The tickets will support the Nicholas Sparks Foundation.

There are also multiple social media channels to follow details about the movie including the Safe Haven Facebook page, @SafeHavenMovie Twitter Id (and #SafeHaven hashtag) and Instagram. I saw fans sharing on the social media sites that they can’t wait for the movie to come out. Luckily, it is coming out soon – this Valentines Day (Febuary 14th).

Part II of my posts about Safe Haven will include more details about tech companies visited on the Safe Haven (movie) tech tour.

Gullivers Travels Movie Out December 25, More On Our Interview with Jack Black, Emily Blunt and Jason Segel

I had the fun of attending the Gullivers Travels (the movie) press screening on December 16 with a group of mom bloggers. First I posted with some behind the scene tidbits about the movie. But I also wanted to share more information from the press interviews with Jack Black (Lemuel Guliver), Jason Segel (Horatio) and Emily Blunt (Princess Mary). Each brought a special part of themselves to their roles. The movie Gullivers Travels opens December 25, so I will be heading to the theatres to share the movie with my family.

While the character Lemuel Guliver reinvented himself in the movie, Jack Black also had words of wisdom about his personal re-invention experiences. It was wonderful to see the philisophical side of an actor that always makes me laugh.

We asked Jack Black “since every kid can’t be transported to a fantasyland, is there a way that people can reinvent themselves in their own lives?”

Gullivers Travels The Movie, An Adventure For The Whole Family

Last Thursday I traveled to LA for a press event I had been looking forward to for quite some time: a screening of the movie Gullivers Travels with the opportunity to interview three of the movie’s fabulous stars: Jack Black, Emily Blunt and Jason Segel.

While I was waiting to board the plane I received a phone call from my tween, middle school son. He told me a few kids from school, friends since kindergarten, were acting mean toward him and he was disappointed. I tried to make him feel better about the situation, but I could not shake the thought of my son feeling “small” while other kids proclaimed themselves “the big kids on campus”.

Update: Here is a link to my second post on Gulliver’s Travels with more interview details.

Of course, the parallel between real life and art was striking that night when I attended the movie screening. The Gullivers Travels movie, based on the popular book by Jonathan Swift, showcases main character Lemuel Guliver feeling like a “small man in a big pond” before he goes on a journey that forces him to overcome his fears and have the courage to reach his goals.

GIVEAWAY: At the bottom of this post I will provide details on my giveaway: One Gullivers Travels movie poster signed by Jack Black, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. I even saw them sign the poster so this is for real! Comment on this post to enter.

Here is the movie trailer for a glimpse of the special effects that brought the story to life. The movie is in 3D, so for the moment just imagine that added dimension of things coming out of the screen:

Movie Trailer:

Gullivers Travels The Movie will debut in theatres on December 25, 2010 and stars Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet, Chris O’Dowd, Catherine Tate and Billy Connolly. The screenplay is by Joe Stillman and Nicholas Stoller, based on the book by Jonathan Swift. The movie is directed by Rob Letterman with Jack Black as one of the Executive Producers. The MPAA Rating is PG and the genre is adventure comedy.

Plot Outline (provided to the press group):

“In a modern, 3D family comedy take on the classic tale, Jack Black (star of “Kung Fu Panda” and “ School of Rock ”) is Lemuel Gulliver, a lowly mailroom clerk at a New York newspaper. After Gulliver bluffs his way into an assignment writing about the Bermuda Triangle, he goes there only to be transported to an undiscovered land, Lilliput. In this fantastical new world, Gulliver is, at last, a bigger-than-life figure — in size and ego – especially after he starts telling tall tales, taking credit for his world’s greatest inventions, and placing himself at the center of its most historic events. Gulliver’s position is enhanced even further when he leads his new friends in a daring battle against their longtime enemies. But when Gulliver loses it all and puts the Lilliputians in peril, he must find a way to undo the damage. Ultimately, Gulliver becomes a true giant among men only when he learns that it’s how big you are on the inside that counts.”

TechMamas Take:

Those who read the book Gullivers Travels, as I did many years ago, will see that the author created an adventure reflecting on the many sides of humor nature; from miopic, petty, and irrational to brave, creative and compasionate. The book also had an anti-war undertone.

Now take that story and put a “Jack Black” spin on it for the movie. With the added bonus that he is a dad himself (he has 2 small sons aged 2 and 4).
